Meet Sport Kid
Sport Kid is not a huge fan of school.
Sport kid would rather be running around outside or playing the Xbox rather than sitting in a classroom. He isn't a huge fan of school but enjoys language subjects, practical subjects like food tech and metal work and of course sport. His relationship with his teachers is polarised by different teaching and classroom management styles.
When it comes to hands on activities in the classroom, sport kid kicks goals all over the place. If he gets to cook, make something or draw or paint. Art, Food Tech, Metal Work and Wood work are stand out subjects for Sport Kid.
Core subjects of English, Maths and Science are a whole different ball game for Sport Kid. It isn't that he doesn't have the capacity to engage intellectually with the content of the lesson, he certainly has the capabilities, he just doesn't find it engaging or fulfilling.
Sport Kid has had some trouble with his teacher's in the past, with both teacher and student not understanding each other, Sport Kid's academic results went on a steep decline in the classes where he couldn't relate to his teacher and perceived a lack of mutual respect between himself and his teacher. As his interest in his subjects drop, his behaviour in class follows the same path. Sport Kid is particularly reactive to negative language, raised voices and threats of discipline from teachers, resulting in Sport Kid making poor behaviour choices in a classroom environment.
The impact that different teaching styles has on Sport Kid is prevalent in his academic results, as he achieves above average marks in classes where he and his teacher have a mutual respect and understanding of each other and below average marks in the classes where he struggles to engage in a positive way with his teacher.
Sport Kid has agreed to blog for the Extra Credit Academy to give us insight into the different teaching styles that can benefit an active, kinaesthetic learner and for readers to have a unique insight into the teaching styles that can hinder a student's academic development.
Thanks for getting on board Sports Kid, we will try not to keep you sitting at your computer for too long!
